AT A GLANCE: ARC Guidelines require all trees in the neighborhood to be maintained for both public safety and the long-term health of the tree, including proper pruning for roadway clearance, lamppost visibility, and structural integrity.
Thank you to those homeowners who proactively maintain their trees, and we recognize that some residents may be in the process of scheduling contractors. About 80 – 90% of lamppost clearance has been done. THANK YOU! However, many trees are left that need to be pruned for street clearance, overall tree health, and completion of lamppost visibility requirements. Avoid violations through proper pruning by March 20.
OVERVIEW: Tree pruning and maintenance is important for more than roadway clearance. Proper pruning helps build strong structure, supports long-term health, and removes dead or damaged limbs that can fall and create hazards.
Many trees in our community are struggling. Some have broken branches caused by vehicle strikes which can invite disease. Others have excessive sucker growth that limits proper structure, airflow, and interior sunlight. Certain species, including maples are showing signs of stress from issues such as gloomy scale disease and root
girdling.
Maintaining trees properly helps protect both public safety and the long-term health of our landscape.
TREE SAFETY & MAINTENANCE: All trees within the community, including street trees, must be maintained in accordance with Callonwood ARC Guidelines and all applicable municipal safety and visibility requirements based on the town in which your property resides. School buses and other tall vehicles regularly travel through the neighborhood and may be forced toward the center of the street to avoid low-hanging limbs, creating unnecessary safety concerns.
Street trees must maintain a minimum clearance of 14 feet over roadways. It is the homeowner’s custodial responsibility to maintain all “street trees” per Architectural Review Committee (ARC) documents on the Stallings side in the curb areas. Greater clearance may be appropriate where tree size allows, provided pruning follows proper horticultural practices and does not involve excessive or improper pruning. Also, please prune around lampposts that are located on your property for increased lighting to provide safety.
Previous newsletters (see callonwood.com “Landscaping & Trees” under questions, and recent emails of January 13 & 26 have addressed these requirements.)
The HOA pruned the trees surrounding the Clubhouse Common area in December and has assessed the rest of the community for future pruning.

ARC: Please note any removal of a tree needs ARC approval and all street trees in the right-of-way will be required to be replaced per the Callonwood Tree Replacement List.
